Awkwafina began as an American rapper and singer, releasing sly tracks that tackled questions of race and sexual identities with a funny twist. Prior to her move to Hollywood, she had the opportunity to perform a variety of tracks. Nora Lum was born to Chinese-Korean immigrants in Forest Hills Queens. Her first exposure to music was from the trumpet. Her classical, jazz and hip-hop education began when she was in her teens. In the school, she focused on journalism and woman's studies. She studied Mandarin for a while in Beijing. Following graduation, she decided to pursue music as her main focus. Her 2012 track My Vag a response to Mickey Avalon's My Dick found viral success on the Internet before settling on her debut LP Yellow Ranger in 2014.
